ARISING REALM Ich kann mich noch gut an die letzte Platte von The Frozen erinnern. Damals war vieles noch unausgereift, der eigene Stil fehlte und zudem versuchte Dennis Panholzer stimmlich an Metallica heranzureichen. Diesmal war ich natürlich gespannt, was mich nun erwarten würde. Siehe da, "Zero" entscheidet sich beträchtlich von seinem Vorgänger. Melancholisch und atmosphärisch geht man zu Werk und schafft ein Werk im gemütlichen Rock-Stil, der ohne einen schalen Geschmack zu hinterlassen, flüssig rotiert. Ja, ich bin positiv überrascht. Gesanglich hält man sich nun nach dem Motto: "Alles fließt", und diesmal ist es nicht der Harndrang der sich bemerkbar macht, sondern eine Stimme, die weich und tief die Ohrmuscheln berauscht. Leider enthält die Mini-CD nur vier Tracks, auf mehr muss man weiterhin warten. Hoffentlich nicht wieder zwei Jahre. Punkte: 4,5/5 BRAVE WORDS & BLOODY KNUCKLES Anger, depression, love-and its loss: all drowned in alcohol. The common thread amongst the 4 members of the Frozen is unhappiness, the band creating plodding dark gothic rock that isn't too far from Danzig. However comparisons to Sentenced, The Black League and To/Die/For are equally as valid. Like a black cloud looming on the horizon, melancholy guitar subdues the sunshine, but at the same time brings an attractive aura of doom with it. Words sung are opaque and estranged, yet the pain is numbed with music that affirms unrequited passion is not uncommon. Eventual ascension from the depths of despair will occur. Heartbreak and healing have never had such an appropriate score to suffer and succumb to. EARSHOT Na hallo, das sind Österreicher? Wahnsinn, so was ist mir noch nie untergekommen... Endlich mal eine Band aus dem Inland, die mal etwas ganz anderes, für unsere Heimat fast schon Unübliches macht. Dafür gibt's für THE FROZEN eindeutig schon mal ein paar fette Pluspunkte. Ganz allgemein bezeichne ich die Musik jetzt einfach mal als Düsterrock - in irgendein fixes Genre passen sie irgendwie nicht, und das ist auch gut so. Wenn auch eigentlich nicht wirklich so ähnlich, könnten trotzdem Liebhaber zum Beispiel von ANATHEMA oder KATATONIA hier durchaus auf den Geschmack kommen. Einflüsse von anderen Bands wie zum Beispiel unüberhörbar TYPE O NEGATIVE, vielleicht gesangsmäßig teilweise auch ein bisschen DANZIG oder hin und wieder auch die 69 EYES sind gut hörbar, und kommen durch den schönen, dunklen Gesang gut zur Geltung. Ich war schon fast der Meinung, dass die österreichischen Herrschaften entweder alle wirklich nicht normal singen können, oder einfach zu feig sind, es zu versuchen, aber hier ist der wohlklingende Beweis!!! THE FROZEN haben durchaus einen sehr eigenen Stil und kommen deswegen recht gut rüber, irgendwie bekommt man beim Hören gleich das Gefühl, dass die Burschen in ihrer Musik nach einigen bewältigten Line Up-Problemen richtig gut aufgehen. Ein kleines Minus gibt's für die irgendwie ein bisserl peinlichen Fotos in eigenen Bandshirts vor dem Sonnenblumenfeld, aber gut, das hat mit der Musik nichts zu tun. Was allerdings doch auch ein Teil der Musik ist, sind die Texte, und hier könnte man vielleicht beim nächsten Mal doch noch ein paar Verbesserungen hineinbringen, da sie irgendwie noch nicht so ganz ausgereift wirken, manche Formulierungen etwas plump und die Reime teilweise schon etwas krampfhaft sind. Es muss sich doch nicht immer alles reimen, oder? Alles in allem aber recht gut gelungen, ich für meinen Teil bin auf den Nachfolger von "Zero" jetzt schon gespannt, und wünsche THE FROZEN alles Gute für die Zukunft. 5 von 7 Punkten HEAVY METAL MANIA The Frozen is an Austrian band and this is their third CD (self-released as all the previous, I guess) and they seem to be very serious about their work, although we are not used in Austrian bands. Anyway, "Zero" is a mini-CD of four tracks and with 20 minutes of total duration. Their definition of their music is a mixture of good old hard rock bands with a little romantic/gothic breeze, with a little of Metallica influences is close enough to what I listened, but I would add that Sentenced's spirit is also present through all the CD. Their songs are calm, with - also calm - breakouts in the choruses, except for the groovier "Feelings Are Dead" and certainly would fit better in a heavier weather, due to the melancholy that they derive. Although it's not something very special, I liked their effort, especially "Levitale" is a very nice song and I think that if they make a more personal sound, we can expect good things from them. OVERALL SCORE: 6 HEAVY ODER WAS!? 
 HELLRIDE MUSIC Heartache and alcohol. Throughout human history, the two seem to go together like peanut butter and jelly. Austria's The Frozen not only were formed by a common bond catalyzed by wretched suffering and booze, they put it to music. Rock for the suffering soul. A great spin for when the female species takes a mind to ripping your beating heart out. And working up a good parting spit in the vacated cavity for good measure. The Frozen harbor a truly remarkable sound, soulful and melodic borrowing a bit from the vintage Gothic bands of yore (remember fellow Austrians Jack Frost?) while still immersed in aggressiveness of hard rock. Tough to categorize and tough to compare to anyone else out there. To these ears at least, a good thing. Guitarist/vocalist Dennis Panholzer has a somber croon somewhere between Glenn Danzig and Pete Steele. Actually, Danzig and Type O Negative might be good touchstones for The Frozen's sound. Add in a little Rumours -era Fleetwood Mac, and you'd be there. That's right, Danzig, Type O Negative and Fleetwood Mac. Told you it was different. Definitely molded from hard rock cast, but performed in a laid back manner, infused with melody and a knack for the catchy. I should also mention that this is an EP comprising four songs, the third release in the band's history since it's formation in '98. I should have mentioned that earlier, but it's getting late, I'm typing this after a heavy meal and I'm feeling a little fuzzy in the head. The only problem I have with this release is the cover. Looks like one of the band members got the band logo tattooed on their chest and are looking for anyway possible to show it off. What better way than to slap it on the cover of their CD? Maybe a little self-indulgent and between you, me and the lamp post, looks kinda.... erm... gay. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but I'm not sure if that's the vibe the band is looking for. OK, I'm clearly rambling and it's time to end this review.... four solid songs, check 'em out. HERTZATTACKE Mit "Zero" präsentieren uns die vier Österreicher von "The Frozen" bereits ihre dritte CD. Leider ist die CD mit ihren 4 Songs und ca. 20 Min Spielzeit viel zu schnell wieder zu Ende. Denn musikalisch wird einiges geboten. Sänger und Gitarrist Dennis Panholzer hat eine sehr eigenständige und weiche Stimme, welche besonders in den gefühlvolleren Passagen punkten kann. Die Musik ist sehr rockig und bewegt sich anfangs irgendwo zwischen Alice in Chains und Metallica, um später noch Einflüsse von Type O Negative und Sisters of Mercy in sich aufzunehmen. Das Songwriting ist ansprechend und ausgefeilt. Trotz der Länge einiger Stücke, wie das etwas ruhiger gehaltene sieben Minuten lange "Leviate", kommt nie Langeweile auf. Auch die anderen Songs brauchen sich nicht zu verkriechen, insbesondere "Disappear" zeigt mit seiner melancholischen Eingängigkeit auf wozu die Jungs imstande sind. Die Texte erreichen im Gegenzug leider nicht die Klasse der Musik und sind kaum der Rede wert. Hier erwarten uns recht unausgereifte Standartwerke welche leider einen kleinen Abzug im ansonsten fast tadellosen Gesamtbild erzeugen. Nebenbei erwähnt ist ein Besuch der Homepage www.thefrozen.net auch empfehlenswert. Dort erhält man alle wichtigen und Unnützen Infos über die Band und deren Mitglieder. Man erfährt beispielsweise von jedem Mitglied seine favorisierte Stellung beim Sex (genau die richtigen Infos also für alle Groupies). Fazit: Hoffentlich muss man nicht wieder 2 Jahre auf neues Material warten denn wenn "The Frozen" die Klasse ihrer aktuellen CD auf die Länge eines Albums bannen können erwartet uns etwas grosses. Freunde rockiger Musik mit leichtem Gothic Touch können jetzt schon bedenkenlos zugreifen. LEGACY 
 LIVE4METAL Hailing from Austria, The Frozen are one of those bands that don't fit into any particular genre and their influences range from far and wide and are not displayed with any notoriety. The vocals of Dennis Panholzer are a bastard to pin down. During Shine In Black he reminded me of a metal version of Talking Heads David Byrne, whilst in Levitate my thoughts veered between David Sylvian and Bryan Ferry!!! Musically it's the same story. The bands sound is Rock based rather than Metal. The occasional forays into Guns N Roses territory are juxtaposed by (upbeat) Gothic overtones and even a touch of REM. A perfect example is Feelings Are Dead. The vocals are pure Pete Steele, whilst drummer Tom Zochling is pounding out a glamtastic (Oriental) beat. Although it may sound like the band lack direction, the sound is actually pretty coherent and everything gels together nicely. But if they are to take the band beyond demo level, a stronger identity is needed. Personally, I think they should head down the darkened path. METAL.DE Ein wenig merkwürdig sehen die Jungs auf dem Promofoto ja schon aus, was ich jetzt aber nicht an den zu knappen, hautengen Girli.. ahem, T-Shirts festmachen möchte, die die halbe Band trägt. Ihr dritter und neuster Output "Zero" scheint dabei mit in die selbe Waschladung gefallen zu sein und beim Heißwaschgang eingelaufen zu sein, zählt er doch gerade mal vier Lieder bei knapp zwanzig Minuten Spielzeit. The Frozens melancholischer Gothic Rock mit Hang zu sehr pathetischen Texten weiß an vielen Stellen zu überzeugen und schafft es durch traurig düsteren Gesang gepaart mit sehr schönen Gitarrenleads den Hörer zu vereinnahmen und hinwegzutragen. Ein Gespür für rockende Songs stellt man zudem mit dem leicht an Metallica gefärbten "Feelings are dead" und "Shine in Black" unter Beweis, die schön die Waage zu den beiden bedächtigeren Stücken halten und das Ganze nicht zu einer reinen Trauerveranstaltung machen. Stilistisch bewegt man sich hier öfters in Richtung Lacuna Coil oder Anathema, was das eine oder andere Deja-vu Erlebnis verursachen kann. Eindeutig dürfte auch sein, wen Bandleader Dennis Panholzer als kleines Kind vorm Spiegel imitiert hat. Unüberhörbar zeigt sein Gesang Parallelen zu Andrew Eldrich (Sisters Of Mercy) und Glenn Danzig. Bis hierhin ist alles noch wunderbar und sitzt schön hauteng, wären da nicht ein paar Waschmittelflecken, die bei genauerer Betrachtung störend auffallen. Im zweiten Stück "Leviate" wirkt der zweistimmige Gesang nicht ganz "stimmig", womit das Stück zum Schwächsten mutiert. Auch ansonsten ruinieren sich die Jungs an manchen Stellen die Songs selbst und lassen das entsprechende Gespür für gute Kompositionen vermissen. Warum in aller Welt muss man dem gelungenen "Disappear" nach drei wunderschönen Minuten ein solches Kitschkeyboardfinale aufs Auge drücken, dass es meiner Oma die Perücke verrutscht? Beim Track "Feelings are Dead" negiert man hingegen das coole Gitarrenthema mit einer hölzernen Strophe. Im Endeffekt wiegen trotz der guten Ansätze die Kritikpunkte schwer, was The Frozen in der Abrechnung runterzieht. (6/10) METAL EXPRESS "We have lost the pleasure of life because the warm summer of our innocent, entertaining youth has finally made way for the cold, stale, adult, winter of everything done a thousand times before..." says the Austrian band The Frozen about themselves on their www.thefrozen.net Web site. Believe me when I say their song topics and lyrics clearly follow this proclamation. You get the feel after listening to Zero each member of the band could easily be prompted to end it all if you clandestinely slipped these guys a dull razor blade after joining them in choking down a 12-pack of room temperature Bavarian suds! Zero represents The Frozen's 4th compilation (sort of - one of the band's earlier works had production issues still needing attention before it'll actually be released), and is a 20-minute, 4-track EP. The songs, "Shine in Black," "Levitate," "Feelings Are Dead," and "Disappear," essentially deal with apathy towards life caused by faded relationships and a lack of gusto towards a bleak and barren reality. To deal with their apathetic purgatory, the song protagonists are prone to reach for the bottle to wash out the pain - but the message is clear that this course of action, at best, is like rubbing a topical analgesic ointment on a compound fracture wound. The true highlight of this album is the band's sound and production quality. It's difficult to describe without getting into gobs of detail, but in sum the sound is uniquely "natural." There is often a heavy rock sound to the instruments, but the sound of each comes through brilliantly unadulterated. The Frozen has accomplished something I thought wouldn't be accomplished (or attempted) by a band ever again - more specifically, The Frozen has captured a mildly alternative "garage band" sound without unnaturally forcing the concept (e.g., the Black Crowes), and sans the typical surface noise associated with recordings generated by the forefathers of the garage band style from the 1970's (e.g., Aerosmith). The best parallel I can provide to analytically describe The Frozen's sound within Zero is a cross between early Alice Cooper and The Cult. The weakness of this album is the vocal delivery. As good as the instrumental sound of this album is, that's how bad the vocal sound comes across. The rendered voice is thick, cumbersome, and often strained ... and virtually all of the lyrics are sung in half-ghoulish low octaves. Too bad, because with stronger vocals, this EP would likely get a stellar "A-" Overall Rating. In the end, though, The Frozen's original sound and skillful playing make up for this shortfall, and provide a refreshingly entertaining, if not too short, listen. Track 1, "Shine in Black," gets my vote for the best song on the EP. It starts with a superb guitar driven groove, which then paces itself along a very methodical drumbeat. Musically, this is possibly the best song I've heard in the last 12 months: simple and deliberate, but well layered and mixed. Vocally, this song is the least annoying. "Levitate" starts out with a soft, repetitive guitar riff, similar to "Love to Love" by UFO, and then moves into a predominantly slow tempo song. When the lyrics begin, the music receives less emphasis, and the awkwardly slow vocal delivery throughout most of the song prevents it from being a success ... a true shame because the track starts out so promising. "Feelings Are Dead" features a great off-key guitar instrumental beginning that is eventually joined by a raucous guitar power chord accompaniment, similar in sound and style to The Cult at their best. The music cooks throughout the song, but the zombie-like vocal presentation again hurts its chances for earning my nomination as song of the year. Musically, this track is almost as good as "Shine in Black." "Disappear" begins with a melancholy, bright-sounding chord pattern, which generally carries on through the whole song. Vocally, this song isn't a complete disaster ... and like its other 3 counterparts, the track is musically innovative and interestingly worthwhile. You owe it to yourself to check out this band ... seldom is the music playing field graced with a fresh sound so unobtrusive and straightforward as the sound produced by The Frozen on Zero. It's not conventional Heavy Metal, but it's quality heavy rock nonetheless ... and certainly worthy of your 20 minutes! Stilistisch sind die vier Niederösterreich ziemlich schwer einzustufen haben ihr Wurzeln aber definitiv im Gothic aber auch im Rock der 70´er Jahre. Mit "shine in black" beginnt die EP mit einer rockig-düsteren Nummer deren Gitarrenriff aber gleich mal im Ohr hängen bleibt und einen, unweigerlich, zum mitwippen zwingt. Sänger Dennis Panholzer ist im ersten Moment ein wenig Gewöhnungsbedürftig, was aber mehr daran liegt das man es schon gar nicht mehr gewohnt ist einen Sänger zu hören der wirklich eine Stimme hat. "Shine in Black" wechselt dann immer wieder zwischen ruhigeren und flotteren Passagen und versteht es so auch über längere Zeit zu fesseln. "Levitat" geht dann den eingeschlagenen Weg konsequent weiter und wird, besonders durch den Gesang, noch düsterer als der vorangegangenen Track. Mit "feelings are dead" erinnern The Frozen sowohl gesanglich als auch von Rhythmus her an die guten alten Sisters of Mercy bleiben aber weiterhin eigenständig und versuchen nicht zu kopieren. Mit "dissapear" gibt es dann noch eine ruhige Nummer zum Abschluss der man einfach Radiotauglichkeit bescheinigen kann ohne irgendwie Schnulzig zu werden. Ruhig und melodiös bringt die Band mit Track Nummer vier die CD zu einem schönen und runden Abschluss. Insgesamt zeigt sich "Zero" als handwerklich und Technisch sehr gut gemachte EP die auch musikalisch und gesanglich absolut überzeugen kann. Für Gothic/Rock Fans ein Pflichtkauf, für alle anderen auf jeden Fall mal einen Versuch wert. HUZIKA BOSNIA Austrijski kvartet The Frozen postoji od 1998. godine. Tokom dosadašnjeg kontinuiranog delovanja, imali su nekoliko puta personalne promene, da bi se konačno ustalili u sadašnjoj postavi. Nisu bend bez iskustva, i do sada su u vlastitoj diskografiji uknjižili tri albumska izdanja. Nisu imali puno prilike da se "importno" predstave, ali u okvirima domaće teritorije nisu nepoznato ime. Prvi album su realizovali 1998. godine i zvao se "Pain". Sledeći album im se pojavio 2001. godine i nosio je naziv "Sudden Frost". Po rečima samih članova postave, aktuelno ostvarenje MCD, "Zero", predstavlja njihov najozbiljniji pokušaj do sada. Može se reći da su austrijanci u muzičkom smislu prilično originalni. Njihov izraz se može opisati kao kombinacija rocka, hard rocka sa blagim gothic primesama, ali veoma moderno intoniran, odsviran i postavljen. Njihov sound nije klišeiziran, i mora se priznati, nije tako lako prihvatljiv na prvo slušanje. Ali, austrijanci su pokazali da imaju muzičkog znanja i činjenica je da njihov rad zaslužuje pažnju. Od četiri numere koje se nalaze na izdanju, istakao bih kao ubedljivije: "Levitate" i "Feelings Are Dead". "Zero" je izdanje koje na respektabilan način promoviše aktuelnu fazu grupe. Potencijal grupe The Frozen je priličan. Videćemo kako će se snaći u budućnosti. Ocena: 8 / 10 PERKELE Tagliano il traguardo del quarto lavoro i Frozen (se si considera anche il materiale registrato nel 2000 a titolo "First snow"), band austriaca attiva ormai dal 1998. Quanto proposto nel nuovo "Zero" è la logica prosecuzione del discorso iniziato in passato e oggi portato avanti con forza e coerenza: siamo al cospetto di un heavy dark rock plumbeo e decadente, incentrato su ritmiche possenti (create da Gerhard Peter al basso e Tom Zochling alla batteria), chitarre graffianti (opera di Tom Koller) e sulla voce profonda ed evocativa di Dennis Pauholzer, che dona un tocco malinconico al tutto con le sue melodie dolci e suadenti. Quattro i brani proposti che si fanno apprezzare per brillantezza e convinzione, l'unica pecca è un'eccessiva tendenza al manierismo che a volte può lasciare interdetti. Per il resto gli elementi per far bene ci sono tutti, a partire l'iniziale "Shine in black", episodio che a dire il vero si distacca dal resto del materiale: il pezzo infatti è costruito su un riff quasi stoner che fa da contrappunto alla maestosità delle parti vocali, ruffiane ma mai fastidiose, anzi... La successiva "Leviatate" è il primo marchio distintivo del gruppo, si tratta di una classica dark song notturna, romantica e zuccherosa, in bilico tra gli Him (il che non è necessariamente negativo...) e i recenti Sentenced. Gothic rock che si ispira a Type O Negative e ultimi Tiamat è invece "Feelings are dead", altro tassello molto ben riuscito, soprattutto nei ricami delle chitarre e nel mood lirico che permea la composizione. La ballad "Disappear" termina l'avventura in modo soffice e sognante, non parliamo di "love metal" ma ci siamo molto vicini... Se avete voglia di staccarvi per un attimo dalla vostra musica preferita per immergervi in territori oscuri e passionali The Frozen sono la band che fa al caso vostro. Rispetto a molta spazzatura che c'è in giro al giorno d'oggi una chance la meritano di sicuro. PULL THE CHAIN Described as an encounter between good (?) old rock / hard rock bands (Budgie) with a little gothic romantic breeze (Evereve), The Frozen are actually something special and far from what I get the use to listening to. Really few metal backgrounds in the four songs of this "Zero" which appears to be the band's third studio recording. Vocals are eventually quite reminiscent of Danzig and musically, The Frozen sound to me as a more energetic version of rock acts such as Him or even Roxy Music. I don't have the use to review this kind of music so I'm quite unable to add something special about this release. But, even if the four tracks of this demo are far from my musical tastes, I'm still able to realise we have to deal here with very professional musicians that brightly composed rock hymns. Make your own opinion. RESURRECTION Die österreichische Combo namens THE FROZEN präsentieren mit "Zero" ihr mittlerweilen drittes Demo. Aus den Lautsprechern meiner Stereoanlage ertönt eine gekonnte Mischung aus gutem, alten Hardrock, mit einer Brise romantischem Goth Rock gemischt. Die Stimme des Sängers, Dennis Panholzer, läßt bei mir keine Wünsche offen. Klar, einzigartig, eine Wahnsinns-Stimmlage hat der Junge. Wow! "Shine in black" ist eine feine rockige Nummer, etwas 80er-Jahre-lastig und geht gut ins Ohr. Im Refrain brüllt uns Dennis ein eindringliches "I feel pain" entgegen. Man glaubt es ihm ohne zu zweifeln, daß er das spürt, was er singt. Der zweite Song auf dem Silberling ist eine romantische, leicht depressiv angehauchte Ballade mit ruhigen Gitarren, die allerdings erst nach einem fetten, schön gespieltem Intro einsetzen. Das ist typisch eine der Nummern, die man sich gern reinzieht, wenn man Liebeskummer hat (jaja, auch die harten Mettler haben sowas *g*). Ein Song fürs Herz, super Lyrics! Beim dritten Song, "Feelings are dead", versucht sich der Sänger als ein kleiner Pete Steele, was ihm auch gelingt. Das tiefe Brummen seiner Stimme wird durch die Backing Vocals seines Bandmembers Thomas Koller unterstützt. Und nicht nur die Stimme erinnert an TYPE O NEGATIVE, sondern der Song selbst auch. Man stelle sich einfach TYPE O mit rockigem 80er-Sound vor, dann erhält man diese Nummer. Der letzte Song, "Disappear", ist wiederum eine langsamere Nummer. Herz-Schmerz läßt grüßen. Und wenn man sich die Lyrics zu Gemüte führt, so kann man sich simpel ausrechnen, daß dieser auch in so einem Zustand geschrieben worden sein muß. Auf der Website von THE FROZEN (http://www.thefrozen.net/) befinden sich eine ganze Latte an Infos und Downloads. Unter anderem auch zwei Cover-Songs der schwedischen Fraktion TURBONEGRO. Das macht die Band und deren Sound ja gleich nochmal um ein Stück interessanter. Ich bin super-erstaunt, daß so ein geiler Sound aus Österreich kommt. Die Jungs würden definitiv einen Plattenvertrag verdienen. Musikalisch ausgereift und die Stimme des Sängers brauch ich wohl nicht nochmals extra zu erwähnen. Alles in allem, sehr empfehlenswert! Ein tolles Demo und eine Website, bei der sich der Besuch allemal lohnt! 8/10 Punkte SCREAM ZERO ist das dritte, selbst produzierte (Mini-)Album von THE FROZEN - und gleichzeitig die dritte CD in Folge, bei der ich mich frage 'Warum ausgerechnet ich?!' Warum landen derartige CDs nur immer wieder bei mir? Ich meine CDs, bei denen ich trotz endloser Hörmarathons zu keiner klaren Entscheidung (überflüssig oder genial?) komme. CDs bei denen man sich wünscht, die Band würde wenigstens ein klein bisschen mehr wie irgendeine andere Band klingen, dass man den Lesern zumindest einen Anhaltspunkt für die eingeschlagene Stilrichtung vermitteln kann. Gerade das ist im vorliegenden Fall nämlich (zumindest für mich mit meinem durchschnittlichen Musikgeschmack) nahezu unmöglich Wenn es für den Sound von THE FROZEN Vergleichsmöglichkeiten gibt, dann sind mir diese völlig unbekannt. Parallelen zu "Metallica", die im Infoschreiben angeführt werden, kann ich jedenfalls beim besten Willen nicht heraushören. Dann doch schon eher eine Prise "HIM" (das sehnsuchtsvolle Schmachten, das "Ville Valo" erst zur Perfektion gebracht hat), die dieser österreichischen Gothic-Mixtur einen gewissen Pep verleiht. Ansonsten ließe sich aus dem Fehlen jeglicher Ähnlichkeiten vielleicht noch ableiten, dass THE FROZEN mit ihrer Musik etwas völlig Neues, Einzigartiges, noch nie Dagewesenes präsentieren. Ich meinerseits tendiere allerdings eher zu der Ansicht, dass bei THE FROZEN zu viele Einflüsse zu einem undefinierbaren Ganzen 'verkocht' worden sind - das einen weder wirklich aus den Socken haut noch besonders weh tut. Düster ist es auf jeden Fall, und Feuerzeug- oder Wunderkerzentauglich wohl auch. Ob die Mucke allerdings auch zu tiefer gehenden Emotionen als 'Och ja, ganz nett...' provoziert, kann ich anhand der vorliegenden vier Songs absolut nicht sagen - daher gibt's auch nur eine Wertung im Mittelfeld und meine Bitte an die Jungs, sich für ihre nächste CD doch 'mal etwas Spannenderes einfallen zu lassen... 3,5 von 6 Pkt. SCROLLS OF STEEL Directly from Austria, here we present the goth/rock act known as THE FROZEN. Short time ago, the CD arrived at our mailbox and was with astonishing surprise that I've listen to this quartet formed by Dennis Panholzer (vocals and guitar), Tom Koller (guitar), Gerhard Peter (bass) and Tom Zöchling (drums). And I mentioned surprise since I was expecting a grim and brutal band (as usually found in Austria) - I couldn´t be more wrong. THE FROZEN are a rock gothish act with about 5 years of existence (they have emerged during 1998 but since then several line-up changes have occured). Actually with two edited CDs, "Pain" (1998) and "Sudden Frost" (2001), this "Zero" is their third recording. Definitely into the hard rock scene, well mixed with gothic and depressive tunes, the band presents itself in four songs ('Shine In Black', 'Levitate', 'Feelings Are Dead' and 'Disappear'). Simplistic and having not a complex musical structure, "Zero" will surely please the most extremist followers of known goth acts, as well it also will please the hard-type radio listener. Not musically bright or with songs that make you remember THE FROZEN for many months, this "Zero" degrees album serves the purpose of presenting the band to the world yet revealing that those guys need to walk a long path in the meadows of music. Glad to hear some quiet sounds from Austria, the jury gives... (7/10) SLEAZEGRINDER The Frozen are from Austria, and the combination of band name and homeland is enough to scare the bejeezus outta ya- I mean, this has gotta be either forest-dwelling Pagan freak metal or fire-breathing Fascist industrial-core, right? Nope. The Frozen are actually a pretty bitchin' power grunge band with a few classy side-steps into stoner rock and power metal territories. Epic opener Shine in Black is the clear standout here, a growling, soulful dose of hard rock thunder that's kinda like a gothy Soundgarden, and it rocks like crazy. Not in the frivolous, burn-down-the-shithouse way, but in the big, bombastic, arena-ready way. The other three tracks follow a similar path, through post-Seattle, post-post Led Zep terrains of groove and power, just with less emphasis on crunch and more raw, jagged emotion. Sure, it all sounds so fuckin' serious that I'm about ready to go drink myself to death or something, but that's always been the appeal of this kinda stuff anyway, right? Yeah, it's dark- they're Austrian, remember- but it's GOOD and dark. SOUNDBASE Horch, was kommt aus Ösiland rein. "The Frozen' haben 2001 mit "Sudden Frost' eigentlich schon aufhorchen lassen, mussten aber aufgrund von Mängeln wie bescheidener Gesang, durchschnittlicher Produktion und dreister Abkupferei bei Danzig und Type O einige Minuspunkte einfahren. Größtes Manko damals war aber vor allem die vor Starallüren nur so triefende Homepage der Proberaumcombo. Natürlich weiß ich nicht, welchen Status die Band in ihrer Heimatstadt und deren Umgebung hat, aber über die Grenzen von Österreich sind sie sicherlich noch nicht hinausgekommen. Das pubertäre Geplänker in prosaischem Stil und abstrusen Englisch lässt auf jeden Fall die Zehennägel hochklappen. Auch wenn es hier eigentlich um Musik gehen soll, muss ich kurz ein, zwei Beispiele bringen, weil dieses "Image' und die Musik bei der Band scheinbar einhergehen. So ist Mastermind, Sänger, Gitarrist Dennis Panholzer nicht gerade mit Bescheidenheit gesegnet. Seine Traumfrau beschreibt er so: "I like women who are strongminded, I like long hair and she should have a very feminine body. Her fingers and toes should be extremely beautiful and I like very expressive noses and angular faces.', um seine eigenen Vorteile mit philisophischer Distanziertheit knapp auf den Punkt zu bringen: "the ability to think far reaching and probably understand the way of life and the ability to see myself dispassionate". Ne klar. Seltsam, dass man weder auf der Webseite noch in den Texten einen ontologischen Ansatz findet, der diese Fähigkeit belegt. Vielmehr scheint es der Band neben der Musik nur um zwei Dinge zu gehen: Frauen (Dennis: "About women: they are so different compared to us men and it's interesting to watch and try to understand them. Of course the main aspect is making love to them") und Saufen (Gitarrist Thomas: "I hate my occasionally abnormal behavier when I'm totally drunk... I hate my soul and my brain for giving me so much questions to answer,..."). Willkommen in der Ballermannfraktion. Ihr macht nur leider die falsche Musik. Lasst Euch von BB Ulf den Weg zeigen. Wer den ganzen Schmu' einmal genießen will, der suche doch einmal diese Ecke auf und klicke den Punkt "We are" an. Musikalisch hingegen hat sich die Band - zumindest so wie sie sich bei den ersten beiden Songs präsentiert - prächtig entwickelt. Vor allem Sänger Dennis hat einen Riesenschritt getan und besitzt wirklich eine äußerst eigenständige Stimme, die sich irgendwo zwischen einer zarten Danzig Variante und Anathemas Vincent Cavanagh einpendelt. Wirklich klasse. Die Musik selber liegt irgendwo zwischen Anathema, Sentenced und Metallica und weiß auf starke Harmonien zu verweisen. Besonders der zweite Song "Levitate' hat es mir angetan. Leider knickt die 4-Track-Promo nach diesem Song auch ein. Viel zu stark tendiert man mit den letzten beiden Lieder in die Goth Rock Ecke und versucht es mit dunklem Type O Gesang. Bieder und langweilig. Und nach dem geilen Einstieg doch eine Enttäuschung. Es gibt einfach schon zu viele Bands, die Pete Steele hinterherhecheln. Zumindest ich kann es nicht mehr hören. Wie drückt sich so etwas schließlich in Punkten aus. "Shine in Black' (10), Levitate (11,5), "Feelins Are dead' (7) und "Disappear' (6). So könnte es lauten. Aber für Songs werden keine Punkte vergeben. Also bleiben wir beim Gesamteindruck. Und der ist dank der guten Produktion, dem hoffnungsvollen Anfang und vor allem der deutlich erkennbaren Steigerung zum letzten Player doch noch 9 Punkte wert. Sollte diese Promo den Jungs einen Vertrag einbringen, hoffe ich nur, dass sie den Müll aus der zweiten Hälfte der CD ad acta legen und sich auf ihre wirklichen Stärken berufen. Dann verzeih ich ihnen auch den Nonsens ... [9/12] VAMPSTER Mal wieder eine CD die viel zu schnell zu Ende ist. "Shine in black" klingt wie ein harter ALICE IN CHAINS-Song mit GLEN DANZIG am Mikro. Auch bei ""Levitate" denkt man an DANZIG auf dem Alternativ-Trip, während "Feelings are dead" eher an 90er SISTERS OF MERCY erinnert. Zum Schluss gibt es mit "Disappear" eine romantische Ballade mit leichtem Southernrock-Touch, klingt da nicht ein wenig METALLICA-Ballade durch? Die Scheibe ist viel zu schnell vorbei und man drückt gern die Repeattaste. Schade dass THE FROZEN uns nur mit diesen 4 Songs beglücken, wenn sie einen Longplayer in dieser Form zusammen-bringen wäre das sicher eine super Scheibe. Aber um die Band kennenzulernen ist "Zero" auf jeden Fall zu empfehlen und macht Lust auf mehr. |
